U.S. stocks rallied for the second day on Tuesday as better-than-expected corporate earnings and strong manufacturing data added to optimism about a stronger recovery. The gains were across the board on Tuesday, with all 10 big-cap sectors in Standard & Poor's 500 finishing higher.
The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 12,000 with a three-digit gain while the S&P 500 hurdled 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],300-point mark for the first time in more than two and a half years.Pfizer led the gains in the 30 stocks that make up the Dow. Its shares soared nearly 5.5 percent after the drug giant said its fourth-quarter profit more than tripled from a year earlier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beating Wall Street estimates.
Auto makers also rose as January sales showed improvement. General Motors said it sold 178,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],896 vehicles in January,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], up 21.8 percent from one year earlier. For GM's so-called core brands - Buick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cadillac,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Chevrolet and GMC - U.S. sales rose 23.3 percent in January. On the economic front,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Institute for Supply Management said on Tuesday that its index of manufacturing activity rose last month to 60.8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the highest level since May. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according to the Commerce Department,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], construction spending in the U.S. unexpectedly fell in December to the lowest level in a decade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], suggesting the industry will continue to lag behind the economic recovery. In other markets, crude oil price slipped on Tuesday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after two days of big gains, as concerns over the unrest in Egypt eased.

Yemen reinforces forces around capital amid fear of protest escalation
The Yemeni Interior Ministry said in a statement it had reinforced security forces around the capital Sanaa and blocked byways as precaution measures to prevent smuggling weapons into major cities. The ministry said on its website it directed security agencies to beef up inspection campaigns for wanted suspects or firearms at security checkpoints in the main highways leading to the capital.
The ministry's measures came following reports that opposition parties are preparing to organize an anti-government demonstration of million protesters in Sanaa on Feb. 3 and called for their members and armed tribal supporters outside the capital to join the march,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an official of the ministry told Xinhua.Inspired by the anti-government protests in Egypt, around 15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 000 Yemeni protesters took to streets in Sanaa last Thursday, calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Since the beginning of this year,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tensions escalated between the opposition and ruling party after parliamentary members of the latter "unilaterally" approved constitutional amendments on Jan. 1, which could make Yemen's leader Saleh the country's president for life.
The opposition coalition then boycotted parliamentary sessions and vowed not to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections, calling for protest against the ruling party's "unilaterally action."Saleh announced last week on state TV that he would step down after his second presidential term expires in 2013.
