As the effects of global warming continue to increase, New Zealanders can expect:
New Zealand is also likely to need to take in climate change refugees, particularly from neighbouring Pacific Island nations.

Consequences of Global Warming
According to climate scientists, New Zealand is one of the top twenty countries likely to be affected least by global warming and climate change. That said, New Zealand weather data show that the country’s average temperature is increasing. Kiwis are already seeing the effects of this warming in more frequent, unusual and extreme weather events countrywide.
New Zealand has a diverse and complex climate, ranging from sub-tropical at the top of the North Island to warm temperate at the bottom. In the South Island, the west coast is cool and very wet. A chain of mountains with alpine conditions creates extreme temperatures in the middle of the island, and cool and very dry conditions in the east.
The news is not all bad for New Zealand. Winters will become less cold, meaning fewer seasonal illnesses and less power use for heating. For New Zealand’s economy, growth rates for commercial trees and crops will increase, and crops will be grown in more places. Farmers will also be able to plant more

New Zealand is small country whose economy depends on a stable and predictable climate. The majority of New Zealand’s export income is from primary productivity, predominantly sheep [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], beef and dairy farming. Forestry is also economically important.
New Zealand depends on its natural beauty for tourism income. Natural environments will suffer from habitat loss, changes in the distribution of plant and animal species, and increased pressure from pests as a result of climate change.
New Zealand’s rainfall pattern is already changing. The north and east of the country have experienced more and longer droughts in the last few years and will become even drier [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while the west becomes wetter and more flood-prone.
The sea level around New Zealand’s extensive coastline has already risen, and could rise by as much as 80 cm by the end of this century. This means more coastal erosion, inundation and storm surges, making coastal settlements very vulnerable.
How Increasing Global Warming Will Affect New Zealand’s Climate
In agricultural areas, warmer temperatures mean large numbers of and more virulent animal diseases, and more seed crop pests. Foresters and farmers can expect more wind damage to their trees and crops with expected increases in wind speed, and more prolonged droughts.
In urban centres, hotter, longer summers will mean increased cases of heat stress and a higher risk of skin cancer. New Zealand may also experience diseases like malaria and dengue fever, which are now almost non-existent, becoming commonplace. The electricity supply will become more strained with increased need for air-conditioning in summer, and there will be greater pressure on already-stretched water resources.
