first scales you will need to learn are the pentatonic scales followed by the major and minor scales in any given key. By learning the pentatonic scales first, you will be able to play rock and blues solos over nearly any progression that calls for them. The knowledge of major and minor scales only adds to your ability as a guitar soloist, and with some practice, you will remember each note of each scale intuitively.
The pentatonic scales get their name from the fact that there are five positions for each scale. In any key, one begins the first position by first playing the root note of any key in its lowest octave. For example, if you're in standard tuning and playing in the key of "G," you will begin the pentatonic variation by first placing your index finger on the low "E" string at the third fret. This is the "G" root note for anything in the key of "G." Beginning there, you will play two notes per string, moving up from the the "E" string to the "A" string and continuing until you have played the last two notes of the scale on the high "E" string at the top of the neck. Your guitar literature for beginners will contain the fingerings for each variation of the pentatonic scale. When you have reached the last note of the scale, play the scale backwards. By doing so, you will move back down to the low "E" string and end the scale on the same note on which you began it. Continue with each variation [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moving up the fingerboard until you have played all five. You can begin with the first variation of the pentatonic scale again once you have made it all the way to the same note on which you began the with the first variation, but an octave higher than before (or twelve frets up the fingerboard).
The pentatonic scales are a great introduction to scale-playing for beginners because they are easily memorized and [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once mastered, can be used to solo over simple three-chord or four-chord progressions. Improvisational blues jams are often played using just the pentatonic scales alone! If you want to create a guitar solo on the fly with a pentatonic scale and you're playing alongside someone else [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all you will need to do is pick out notes from within the scale to play in time with the rhythm of the person with whom you are playing.
While the pentatonic scales are the simplest and most useful scales for beginners, knowledge of the major scales and minor scales will allow the guitarist to perform improvisational solos and write complex progressions in much the same fashion. The difference is that these scales often contain more than just two notes per string and will take more time to memorize. The benefit, however, will be the ability to play not just basic rock and blues solos, but also to solo over any progression in any key be it major or minor. A song in a minor key won't sound right if you solo over it using a variation of the pentatonic scales, for example.
