The "gift" of life, when lived well, mainly consists of living in the "present" moment. As Nigerian musician and social activist Babatunde Olatunji said, "Yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery. And today? Today is a gift."
Keep your mind on the here and now and you will not only be happier but more accomplished. Whatever you want to be or have, the key to the future is now. Dreams become reality only when they are acted upon, and the only way to act on anything is to be focused on what you're doing. To be happy you must be a doer as well as a dreamer. So insist on living a new day every day. Don't dwell on the past or let yourself merely fantasize about the future. "With the past, I have nothing to do; nor with the future. I live now," Ralph Waldo Emerson said.
So what are some things you've dreamt of doing or having but haven't accomplished yet? Susan M. Heathfield, the author of an email course on called "Ten Days To A Happier, Successful Career and Life" suggests that you list your favorite activities as well as a hundred or more things you'd like to do in your lifetime. Then stop worrying and start living by adding one new thing that's on your list each day to your schedule.
Sure, some of the things you want to do or have will take some time. Training for and getting a new job, running a marathon, or going camping certainly takes more than a day. Yet you live in the present moment by doing a little something every day towards goals and dreams. Inevitably the present becomes the future which may very well be your dream come true, but you can only be living right now. As D.H. Lawrence said "The living moment is everything."
Though some of your dreams of doing and having can only be accomplished in weeks, months, or years, there are also dreams that can be accomplished in a single day. Perhaps you felt inspired to visit a specific museum after reading about it in a magazine. So what are you waiting for? If you're not busy right now, put on your shoes and go over there. If you're busy, schedule a time for it right now.
The "time key" to happiness is living in the present. Forget about yesterday unless there's a lesson to be learned that will help you today. And forget about tomorrow unless you apply something from your dreams today.
Albert Einstein said, "I never think of the future. It comes soon enough." Both the inevitable future and today will be a lot more fulfilled by living now. The delightful opportunities and gifts life offers can only be seized when you're present in the present.
For us, Halloween was here. Some of the older folks were concerned about tomorrow night, which was really Halloween night. We had been told, "Tomorrow night you are not leaving this house." The story was the same with all of us. There was a conspiracy among the older folks. They had it in their heads to spoil our tricking, but our plans were already made,Red Monkey jeans, and we had taken what our folks had said into account. We would do our tricking on this night, the night before Halloween and forget about the treats of tomorrow night. Our plan was for all of us to get out of the house as quickly as we could after supper. If your folks raised suspicions, then you were to sneak out before supper. After all, what is a meal missed when the fun of Halloween was about to begin?
Just before supper, Wizzer gave our signal then hollered for me from outside the kitchen door just like we had planned. Mom never could say no to Wizzer. I had never told Wizzer about this, but one day I had heard Mom say that she felt sorry for him, what with him being a change of life baby and all. It wasn't my intent to spy on her. This particular conversation was overheard at one of her gabfests with her friend Julia. I was only trying to do what I had been trying to do with no luck at all for as long as I could remember. Namely, it was to see Mrs. Wetzel sleeping and doing something that took some watching and being careful. Just now, they was pitting and peeling peaches and getting them ready for canning.
