Being a webmaster is fun for a lot of people. For some people it is just another job they are good at but don't particularly enjoy. We all make mistakes in life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whether it be in everyday affairs or the critical aspects of our job, an error is bound to occur.
After thinking of some of the webmaster mistakes I've made over the years, and observing some of the attitudes of the more successful website operators, I've decided to list a few random things that we web geeks should never forget.
Losing Your Domain
Never forget to pay the registration/renewal fee of your domain name. This might sound silly, but there are thousands of vultures scanning the lists of recently expired domain names. Also, there is a way to be on a buyer's list next in line for a domain name should it come up for grabs. Of course, there is a fee to be on the list, it's sort of like using a broker to buy the name for you so you don't have to take on the task of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]ing and waiting for its expiration yourself.
Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is a grace period for scooping up your domain before it's released into the wild, but once it has expired and a parked page sits on its front door (during the grace period),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will lose valuable indexed content as the site gets re-crawled/re-indexed and your real content is hidden behind a mask of affiliate search links. Speaking from experience, yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it happens. Not Good!
Your Head Is Too Big
Remember how hard it was to start out as a noob webmaster? Remember being frustrated with snide people that weren't very helpful? Remember getting banned or kicked off of a site because you didn't know what you were doing? Maybe you're not at that point yet, maybe you are just starting out and in the process of getting ridiculed and making big webmaster promises to yourself. You promise that you won't treat noobs the way you've been treated, you will abolish censorship to the extent of the law - you will make the world a better place! Great, now I must tell you that you should remember all of these feelings once you hit it big time. NEVER forget about the noobs, never laugh at the new guy - remember that you were in those same shoes once upon a time. Don't let your head get too inflated about your success.
Greedy Linking
Ever since Google revealed that they rank a website based on how many "other" websites link to it, there has been a link building frenzy across the internet. Okay,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], step on the brakes for a moment. You need to understand that Google is smart about link building techniques and they are good at determining what makes sense. Matt Cutts pointed out that a website that sells links by placing articles on it is as obvious as the sky is blue. When I say he pointed it out, I'm serious - in one of his (Google) seminars - he showed a site that "appeared" to be selling links within articles. The biggest question is why would a best car loans article (with three links in it) be on the same website as an article about hysterectomies (with three links in it). Of course, this could happen, but Google isn't putting much credence in stuff that is "off topic". Aim for quality, folks.
