Steve Smith Jersey Injury Buries Already Putrid Panthers Passing Attack
The Carolina Panthers stopped crossing their fingers with Dwayne Jarrett two weeks ago when he was made inactive for the game with the Bengals. He caught two passes this season. He has one touchdown grab for his career, which lasted 3-plus seasons with Carolina. They were wasting their time.
The issue was not what to do with Jarrett. The team released him after his second DUI and might have released him anyway. The issue is finding a passing game amid the rubble that now includes All-Pro Steve Smith Jersey, who is on the shelf with a high ankle sprain.
Steve Smith Jersey told The Charlotte Observer he needs an orthopaedic boot to walk. It does not look like he will play Sunday against the Bears.
The Panthers needed to move the ball Sunday against the Saints, down 16-14, and had no remedy through the air. No Steve Smith Jersey, no nothing. He was on the sidelines in the third period.
Suddenly, the wide receiving corps is rookies David Gettis and Brandon LaFell, as well as Armanti Edwards, another rookie who has been inactive for four games.
The Panthers claimed wide receiver David Clowney off waivers from the New York Jets. At least he is not a rookie. And with a chance to play, who knows.
The Panthers (0-4) still have tight ends Dante Rosario and Jeff King, but they are not exactly going to rip the top off the defense.
The passing game, by the way, is being led by a rookie, Jimmy Clausen.
This is not a good way to break out of losing streak to start the season. The Panthers' passing game is 28th in the NFL (155 yards per game).
The quarterback rating is 52.2, the lowest in the league.
There are going to be a lot of throws for Clausen in between the hash marks, or screen passes. The whole operation is going to be trim, which means the Panthers better not turn the ball over on the long possessions they are going to need to score.
What's more, there better be help from the defense in stripping some footballs for turnovers. The Saints practice it; why not the Panthers. Theirs is not an offense that is going to create a lot of opportunities for itself with explosive plays, so they need a turnover or two.
